Hurricane Simon Hits Category 4 Near Manzanillo, Rachel Comes Ashore in Baja Norte
Tonight's report
¡Buenas noches, Los Cabos! Lobo here, live from the rock, and tonight's show is presented by East Cape Concierge. Big night in the tropics, amigos. Two storms, and neither one is aimed at Los Cabos.
First up, Hurricane Simon. As of the nine o'clock Central time advisory, Simon is a Category four with max winds of one hundred fifty-five miles an hour and pressure down to nine hundred twenty-eight millibars. The eye is about sixty-five miles south-southwest of Manzanillo, about four hundred sixty-five miles southeast of us. It's crawling north at five miles an hour. Simon should be near or just inland over west-central Mexico on Sunday, then weaken fast once it moves over land.
A Hurricane Warning is up from Punta San Telmo to El Roblito and for Las Islas Marías. A Tropical Storm Watch runs from east of Punta San Telmo to Lázaro Cárdenas.
Then there's Rachel, now post-tropical. As of the eight o'clock Pacific advisory, winds are sixty miles an hour, about forty miles west of Punta Baja, roughly six hundred forty miles northwest of Cabo, racing north-northeast at thirty-six miles an hour. Tropical Storm Warnings cover the west coast of Baja from Punta Eugenia north to the border, and the east coast from Isla San Luis up to Puerto Peñasco.
Now for our neighbors. Colima, Jalisco, Michoacán, Simon could drop ten to twenty inches of rain, with isolated spots up to thirty inches through Sunday. That means life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in steep terrain, plus dangerous storm surge on the coast. Hurricane conditions start early Sunday in the southern part of the warning area.
Baja Norte, Rachel comes ashore tonight with tropical storm conditions into Sunday morning and one to three inches of rain. Big waves and coastal flooding get worst tonight into Sunday morning with the high tides. Stay off the beach, follow Protección Civil, and check on your vecinos.
Back home, mañana looks warm with some showers around. High of eighty-seven, low of seventy-six, light east-southeast wind around nine miles an hour. Water's a toasty eighty-eight degrees. Órale.
Tonight's show is brought to you by East Cape Concierge. Once the tropics calm down, let them set you up with a fishing charter, a snorkel day at Cabo Pulmo, or a private chef right at your place. Check out eastcapeconcierge.com.
That's the tide report. Stay safe, look out for each other. Sal y sol, Cabo.
